a quick poll

I'm not sure how many of you readers are men, but if you are or you know the answer anyway please let me know.

I'm looking at buying a new vehicle. So in order to get the best price, I e-mailed several dealers in my area with the model information of what I wanted and the option/package level desired and asked for quotes.

I instantly got feedback in the form of phone calls and multiple e-mails. but the first question that all of them asked me was this: What color are you interested in?

now, is this because I'm a woman or is this because its something I didn't specify? because there are several things I didn't indicate, like my timeframe for purchase or if I needed financing or several other details.. but maybe this is an important thing to figure out first. Any opinions?

I'll take a shot at this. My guess is that the guy needs to nail the specifics of the item down first before getting into the details of how and when. The colors they can sell you will depend on what they have in stock, they can't just necessarily sell you the color you want the same day. They may not have it and need to get it from another location or order it from the manufacturer. Once he has determined if he has it in stock or if there is a timeframe for it being in stock, then you can start discussing what your timeframe for purchase is and how you're going to pay for it. Hey may say, "Hey, all our neon green RAV4s are out of stock and it will be a month before we can get another one in." At that point you may decide to go to another dealer and he will have wasted his time talking about financing and etc.

Note: This is all hypothetical and based on conjecture.

speaking from personal experience... usually they are more interested in the timeframe of a purchase than the color (today? two weeks from now?) and how much you are willing to spend... they can supply any color you want and ship it from other locations... once they make the sell, they don't really care how much you have to wait, it's no longer their problem... if you want a certain color really bad, then you'll be content waiting no matter what...

so in short, yeap, it's messed up...

If you are really curious, then I would send out similar requests to other dealers in your hubby's name... see what you get... I bet they'll just ask you when would you be willing to come in and make the purchase.

cheers!
