some times, its the world

and sometimes its you.

But seriously, what is wrong with people??? Now, I know that once you have a kid, your opinions change about things. Some people become more conservative, more religous, more paranoid, more... more....

but really, as far as I can tell, the american public still can't find its own ass with regard to movies. And if having a child has changed my opinion in this area at all, its only strengthened my belief in this regard. And I think I know what's wrong with people.

When I went to high school, I had great teachers for my English classes. I distinctly recall reading Frankenstein and learning about the concept of doppelgangers. I remember reading great southern literature like 'As I Lay Dying' and learning that great writing has more to do with conveying feeling and concepts instead of using big words. I read shakespeare (a lot) and euripedes (repeatedly).

My point is that I can recognize the difference between a classic story and boringly predictable one (and yes, I'm still talking about YOU, JAMES CAMERON, and your ridiculously overblown movie (avatar) and those idiots who loved it - and if I know you and you loved it... well, we can talk about it, but I am totally going to judge you because my buddha ain't big enough to deal with this, yo.)

anyway, back to the point. This is actually another movie review entry. really.. and maybe a bit of a rant (surprise). So here we go:

The Last Airbender
Apparently, everybody hated this movie. Maybe it had mega-hype and mega-fail. Maybe people were pissed off at M. Night Shayamalan because at the end of "The Village" we all learn that's its not a fantasy movie about young adventurers facing down monsters, but its really about a bunch of uptight rich people hiding in the woods. I can dig that.

But I liked this movie. It had beautiful scenery, special effects, and fantastic fight scenes. I really liked it. And I get it. The plot was compressed; the movie "butchered" the animated story. ok. fine. but I don't see how that justifies the god-awful reviews it got. "Worst movie of the year"? I hardly think so.

can't we all just get along?

ok, next movie:
The Girl Next Door
Check out the plot synopsis for this one: A teenager's dreams come true when a former porn star moves in next door and they fall in love. Doesn't it just sound awful? But let's not judge too quickly. You know who is in this movie? Emile Hirsch and Timothy Olyphant. They're good actors. and cherry on the cake is James Remar, who always gets stuck in these bit parts. but whatever.

I thought this was going to be some awful tale of teen raunch and comedic humiliation, much like all those other high school movies.

but it isn't. It is a thoughtful, surprising, and entertaining movie. good acting and good plot. I recommend.
